1. What are the age requirements for hunting in Labrador?Labrador Artic Charc Outfitters
Hunters for big game must be 18 years of age, and 16 years of age for small game.

2. What are the season dates for hunting & fishing in Labrador?
Caribou: August 10 – April 30
Small Game: October 1 – April 20
Migratory Bird: September 1 – December 8 (License available at Canada Post)
Black Bear: (Spring) April 1 – July 13
Black Bear: (Fall) September 1 – October 30
Fishing: February 1 – September 7

3. Does a non-resident hunter require the services of a licensed guide?
Non-resident big game hunters are required to be accompanied by licensed guides. Guides are supplied by licensed outfitters. Non-residents do not require the services of an outfitter or guide to hunt small game or migratory game birds.

4. What type of I.D is required?
Non-resident hunter must possess proof or verification of having met his/her own jurisdictions hunter education requirements and must present this information immediately upon request of a Conservation Officer.

5. Do I require a game export permit?
Yes, hunters must possess a game export permit to take game out of the Province. Export permits are available free of charge from all DNR and Wildlife Division Offices and licensed outfitters.

6. Do I require a black bear CITES permit?
Yes, Non-resident black bear hunters also require a CITIES permit to transport black bear parts outside Canada.

7. U.S. Customs Declaration requirements?
Hunters must use a U.S. Customs Declaration Form 3315 for all game entering the United States from Canada. American hunters should obtain these at U.S. Customs when leaving the United States.

8. Canada Customs Declaration requirements?
Non-residents arriving at a Canada Customs port must declare all their firearms. For further information, contact Canadian Firearm Center at 1-800-731-40001-800-731-4000 FREE or visit their website address: www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca.

9. What method is used for hunting caribou?
A spot and stalk hunting method is used most often as the caribou hunting grounds are mostly barren. Don’t forget your binoculars!

10. What is the average shooting distance I can expect?
Although shots are often taken at a closer range, hunters should be prepared to hit their mark at 200 yards. With a bow, the hunter should hit their mark at 45 yards but occasionally is required up to 60 yards for the big stags.

11. Bows and Arrows?

It is unlawful:

  • To hunt big game with a long bow and arrow unless the bow has at least twenty kilograms pull at full draw.
  • To hunt big game with a compound bow and arrow unless the bow has at least twenty kilograms pull at peak draw.
  • To hunt any wildlife with a cross bow and arrows.
  • To hunt big game unless the hunting arrows are tipped with a metal hunting head with two or more sharpened cutting edges.
  • To hunt any wildlife with an arrow tipped with poison or a drug.
  • To hunt any wildlife with an arrow equipped with barbed or explosive arrowheads.

12. Dogs?

  • It is unlawful to take a dog unleashed or to allow a dog to run in any area frequented by wildlife from April 1 to August 31 inclusive, except in designated field trail/dog training areas.
  • A Conservation Officer may destroy any dog found to be harassing wildlife.

13. Guides?

It is unlawful:

  • To act as a guide without a valid guide licence.
  • For a guide, while so employed, to kill or take game.
  • For a guide, while so employed, to accept meat in payment or partial payment or services rendered.

14. When do caribou shed their velvet?
Caribou begin to shed their velvet around mid-September. Before mid-October, a large portion of the trophy caribou have their velvet removed.

15. What type of weather can I expect for my hunting trip?
Labrador weather is anything but predictable. August to mid-September, average temperatures can range from 5°C to 15°C with crisp mornings. During the winter months wind-chill is a factor. January and February temperatures ranging from -20°C to -50°C. March and April temperatures ranging from -10°C to -25°C. It is very important that you dress for the weather.

16. If I get my caribou early in the hunt, can I do some fishing?
Yes, fishing is available upon completion of your hunt. The fishing season runs from February 1 – September 7. Minimal cost for arrangements.

17. Can I hunt on Sunday?
In Newfoundland & Labrador, it is unlawful to hunt any game on Sunday with a firearm or bow.

18. How much snowmobiling is involved with the Winter Hunt?
Depending on the location of the herd, hunters can average from 2-6 hours of snowmobiling per day. Hunters should be in good shape and have some experience with snowmobiling. The Winter Hunt in November & December involves hunting by vehicle with snowmobiles used as needed.

19. How do I get to Labrador if traveling by plane or road?
Connecting flights from any of the major airlines will bring you to the Wabush Airport in Labrador from virtually anywhere in the world and can be arranged through your local travel agent with ease. The majority of our guests make a connecting flight in Montreal via Air Canada. If traveling by road, Route 389 will bring you from Baie Comeau-Quebec into Labrador West. This partly paved road is 581km, and will take you over the Manic Five Dam; the largest arch and buttress dam in the world.

20. Is there a floatplane included in my adventure, what is the baggage limit?
Yes – For those guests traveling to the Lodge via floatplane from Labrador City, there is a baggage weight limit of 45lbs per person on the floatplane. Excess baggage weight may well mean being without some items until alternate flights is organized with additional costs.

21. I am a U.S. resident entering Canada for the first time. What should I know prior to arriving at Canada Customs for my hunting trip?
There are a couple of items you should be aware of:
a. New gun laws require a gun registration at the Canadian Border. Hunters can take up to 3 guns. Call 1-800-731-40001-800-731-4000 FREE for the paperwork. Fill out ahead of time but do not sign until you get to the border. The fee is $50(CAD), and is valid for a 12-month period.
b. American citizens or permanent residents of the United States do not need a passport to visit Canada, but should carry a birth, baptismal, or other documents establishing their citizenship. Visitors from all other countries must have valid national passports.

22. What currency is used in Labrador?
The Canadian dollar is the currency used in Newfoundland & Labrador. We do accept American dollars from non-Canadian guests for our fishing and hunting packages, but we recommend that guests carry some Canadian dollars for emergency purposes.

23. Is there a tax refund for visitors to Canada?
Yes, non-Canadian guests can apply for a refund on the tax paid on accommodations and goods exported back to their homes. Original invoices must be submitted with your claim. We will supply you with the “Tax Refund for Visitors” form required.
